Mabel had offered only the bare minimum details of the event to Reg and Mrs Chandekar – promising a full explanation later. They took her on faith and she loved them for it.

When Hildy arrived, they trooped out to the car. Harkin understood they were going to Fellbridge Hall, and that calmed him. He sat between Mabel and Park on the journey, while Augustus and Gladys hung over the seat, the boy peppering Hildy with questions.

‘Are you a real policeman or is it just a costume? Do you have a truncheon to beat robbers and thieves with? May I see it? I think I might want to become a policeman, you see, and I might need the practice.’

‘You have to go to school to join the Metropolitan Police,’ Hildy said. ‘Did you know that?’

That fact quieted the boy for the rest of the journey. Upon arrival, Gladys hopped out of the car and trotted off with purpose round the side of the Hall and in the direction of the kitchen. Hildy escorted Harkin to the steward’s office with Augustus in tow, and Mabel asked Park to find Binks.

‘I don’t want him to know about Harkin yet. I want to be there when they see each other. Perhaps he should stay in his quarters.’

Park nodded. ‘I’ll see to it. And I’ll check on the Wolseley – see if the engine is still warm.’ He gave her hand a squeeze and they went off.

Mabel stood in the entrance hall alone. It was too early for lunch in the square dining room and no meetings had been scheduled for the morning. The Hall felt deserted. Mabel knew she must find Emma first and tell her about Oliver Harkin before anyone else got wind of his presence.

But before she could move, Collette appeared from the far corridor that led to the west wing.

‘Have you seen Emma?’ Mabel asked.

‘I’ve seen no one,’ Collette replied. ‘Dorothea and that little Ruby are in the garden with Campsie – I do wish he would listen to me about pegging the ramblers. Diane is’ – Collette waved vaguely above her head – ‘talking with Cora about hats. Skeff was interviewing Emma about our hopes and plans, but that was earlier. Pretoria – well really. You’d think she would never see another bluebell again if she didn’t see these. I told her she should wait until May and the countryside would be covered with them as it always is, but did she listen? No, she went off straight away this morning.’

‘Mabel?’ Emma came out of the salon. ‘Mabel, where is your Augustus?’

‘He’s with Hildy.’ And Oliver Harkin. ‘I need to have a word with you.’ Mabel crossed the entrance hall and took Emma’s elbow to guide her back into the corridor. Best not to let anyone overhear who had arrived. Not yet.

But they’d not gone a step before Harkin’s voice echoed in the corridor as he burst into the entrance hall with Hildy behind him.

‘Why am I being held?’ he demanded.
